Hayley Galo was born in 1982 in Wellington. Her iwi (tribal) affiliations traverse from Ngāti Toa Rangatira located at the head of the fish (the North Island of New Zealand) to the top of Te Waipounamu (the South Island). Hayley has a Rauangi Degree from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and a Diploma in Teaching from Victoria University in Wellington. She is currently also studying a Bachelor of Mātauranga Maori from Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki, whilst still working as a kaiako (teacher) at Te Kura Māori o Porirua.

Her paintings are influenced by tā moko (cultural tattoo design) and the work inside her whare tupuna (ancestral house) 'Toa Rangatira'. Simple motifs, and transparent colour applied to geometry principles, explore Galo's interest in the connection that exists between Te Ao Marama (the world of light) and Te Ao Wairua (the spiritual world).

Hayley Galo was selected to exhibit at the 'Healing our Spirit' conference in Hamilton in 2015 which hosted more than 1500 delegates from around the world. Her work also appeared in New York at a pop up event held at Ora NY Gallery in 2016.

Her current art practice addresses the obligation of generational reciprocity. Whakapapa, history, and kaupapa Māori are the subjects of Galo's work, finding her place in the diverse fabric that makes up her Māori and Ngāti Toarangatira identity and its orokohanga (origin).

Hayley Galo belongs to the Ngāti Toarangatira, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngai Tahu, Taranaki and Ngāti Koata tribes.
