South Auckland born in 1970, Lorna spent seventeen years in Australia from the age of seven, returning to New Zealand with her Ōtaki born husband in 1993. Considering herself an artist-in-training, Lorna spent over thirty years developing her artistic creative style, which is still evolving constantly.
Lorna Tawhiti belongs to the Tainui and Ngaiterangi tribes of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Training formally in Visual Arts, Lorna explored commercial graphic art and design first, before branching out into her current professional tattooing practice.
There were two significant ‘pulls’ in Lorna’s life from an early age, first, to be a tattoo artist and second, to be a teacher.
Fast forward and after nearly twenty years teaching, the last three of those learning to tattoo through mentorship, Lorna set up business, May 15 Tattoo in 2015.
Lorna has since combined both graphic and computer art experience to create artworks in tattoo and digital art form.
Typically Lorna’s art has fine line, feminine details and draws on her inspirations - whānau, te ao māori, nature, mana wāhine, memories and spiritual themes.
