Born in 1985, Sophia Motoitoi Parun has always had a passion for art and textile design. Growing up, she always took art at school and in her last years of college studied only art and design subjects.
After completing college, Sophia decided to continue with her creative ventures and enrolled at Massey University to study a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Textiles. Sophia really enjoyed the hands on workload and loved that painting and drawing were daily tasks.
During and after university, Sophia realized it was the painting and drawing part of the design process that she enjoyed the most. This led her to keep painting and drawing on a daily basis. Although Sophia trained as a textile designer, she has an underlying passion that goes back to her roots to experiment on not only fabrics but anything she can paint and draw on.
Separate from her textile design, Sophia is currently experimenting with her art and is using a wide range of different painting and drawing media. Her subject matter is usually quite deep and much of her work has spiritual themes. Sophia likes to speak to the soul with her work and there is often great meaning in each piece. Sophia likes to separate her passion for art from her textile design. However the two often get intertwined, for example when she incorporates her love of pattern into her art pieces. Sophia is also in the early stages of starting a digitally printed silk scarf business featuring her own artwork.
Art and textiles have a strong place in Sophia’s heart and they link back to her whakapapa. Of Ngai Tahu descent, Sophia comes from a line of wahine toa who were all artists and textile designers/makers, in some way or another. Sophia feels a very strong pull back to her whakapapa and feels that is where her creative drive stems from.
