Open edition canvas print by indigenous New Zealand Māori artist, Miriama Grace-Smith of the Ngāti Hau, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Toarangatira and Ngāti Porou tribes of New Zealand.
Featuring the 'Taiao I' design.
Miriama states 'this piece is a scene of what remains of the old quarry left behind at Hongoeka Bay. The old concrete can be seen pouring into the ocean, in the background you can see the beautiful sea, sky and land. With this painting I was interested in the treatment of our environment. During the time I was painting this work, the large 2016 earthquake hit and the images of the Kaikoura seabed lift began popping up everywhere, these images inspired the next painting, 'Taiao II'.
'Taiao I' and 'Taiao II' are about the importance of looking after our environment, by remembering to give back, to not just take. Using colour I have painted these works in a way so that the viewer can view them how they like, there is no intention for them to see what I see.'
