TOI TANGATA ARTIST INTERVIEW WITH MIRIAMA GRACE-SMITH
How long have you been making art for? How/where did you start?
I have been making art for most of my life, but started to take it seriously when I was in primary school. I would
spend my time after school hours sketching in my sketch book that I would take with me everywhere.
What are some of the key milestones/highlights on your journey as an artist so far?
Some of the key milestones on my journey so far have been, completing my B.A in Fine Arts, being in various group
art exhibitions, running wardrobe on the feature film 'The Pā Boys', becoming a member of Māori women's art collective
Toi Wāhine, teaching visual arts to youth and children, illustrating two children's books, opening our first Foresight Clothing
store in Paekakariki and then opening our second store on Cuba Street Wellington as well as recently completing my first
moko on a client.
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced on your journey as an artist?
The biggest challenge for me so far has been the process of growing my business Foresight Clothing, it sure isn't easy.
I am an artist and business owner. I design clothing, customise footwear, paint, illustrate, do mural work, teach visual
arts, do wardrobe work in film, print make and I am currently learning how to do moko.
What messages do you hope to convey through your artworks?
There are a number of different messages I hope to convey through my works, to name a few, remembering those that
have passed, stories about the future, present and past, stories about our kaitiaki and caring for our environment.
What are some of your big goals and aspirations as an artist?
My very big goal is for my label Foresight Clothing to be a recognised label across Aotearoa, to have my first solo
exhibition and to do some travel doing art and moko as I travel.
What are five random facts about you?
I am addicted to lemons and vinegar chips, I love things that taste sour.
I might be a tad OCD I double check things just incase I have forgotten to do it, even when I know I did.
I love dancing.
I love animals, my pets are like my best mates.
Me and my partner of almost 8 years grew up living right next door to each other since we were babies. But didn't get together until we were in our 20's.
What are your other passions in life and why?
Hanging out with my whānau and friends and to creating art! Because these things make me happy!
